Chinese (Cantonese) Opera Translation and Operatic Culture International Conference

Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre of Hong Kong Metropolitan University will host the “Chinese (Cantonese) Opera Translation and Operatic Culture International Conference” on May 4, 2026 (Monday).
The Conference brings together local and international scholars to explore how Chinese operatic texts travel, transform and endure across languages and cultures. The Conference provides a focused platform for academic exchange, interdisciplinary dialogue and future collaborations in Chinese opera and theatre studies.
The programme is organized around three thematic panels: (1) Hsiung Shih-I’s journey from translator to theatre pioneer; (2) the challenges and sustainability issues of bringing Cantonese opera to the global stage; and (3) the Cultural Transmission of Chinese Theatre: from Asia to North America.
