Foreword
In the new era, China places great emphasis on building a public cultural service system and advancing aesthetic education for all. Art museums at every level have been called on to fulfill their public mission, namely, nurturing people through culture, enriching hearts through beauty, and serving the public. They are expected to serve as hubs for non-profit cultural programs, widespread arts education, and the broader dissemination of creative works, while driving the creative transformation and innovative development of China’s fine traditional culture. As a key art museum in China, Shaanxi Province Art Museum has remained firmly rooted in the overarching requirements for arts and culture in the new era. Upholding the principles of serving the people and serving socialism, the museum leverages high-caliber exhibitions, public arts education, and regular outreach programs to steadily strengthen its role in public cultural service. It carries the important mission of preserving regional cultural heritage, making art accessible to all, and advancing arts education across society.
The fertile land of Shaanxi region has nurtured Qinqiang opera for over a thousand years, while brush and ink carry forward the spirit of a new era. As the most iconic intangible cultural heritage of the opera in Northwest China, Qinqiang opera is deeply rooted in the lives of ordinary people. It is a living art form that embodies the character and soul of the region and a truly vibrant treasure of Chinese traditional opera. The recent hit TV drama The Protagonist brought Qinqiang opera into the national spotlight, telling the story of a performer’s lifelong devotion to the stage. It vividly captures the craftsmanship and cultural passion that have been passed down through generations of Chinese opera. Its success has reignited public interest in this vibrant art form, creating a perfect moment to share Shaanxi’s local cultural heritage with a wider audience.
To promote local classics, carry forward regional cultural heritage, and strengthen public arts education, Shaanxi Province Art Museum presents the Grand Voice of Shaanxi and Vivid Sight of the Stage - Opera-themed Fine Artwork Exhibition. Anchored in the museum’s core mission of public service, this exhibition uses art as a vehicle for cultural education and brings together talented artists from across Shaanxi to capture the iconic characters, timeless stage imagery, and enduring spirit of Qinqiang opera. The works on display bridge classical technique with contemporary sensibility, creating a vibrant dialogue between Chinese opera and painting.
This exhibition is more than a showcase of local artistic talent. It’s also our public initiative to bring fine art and aesthetics education to wider audiences and make traditional opera accessible to everyone. To bring high art to the public and tradition into everyday life, through supporting education programs, art appreciation sessions, and public engagement activities, we’ll broaden audiences’ horizons and enrich the cultural lives of all.
Cultural roots run deep, and art speaks softly. Grounded in the demands of our time, the museum’s public mission, and Shaanxi’s artistic heritage, this exhibition brings Qinqiang opera to life through visual art and makes art education truly accessible to all. We hope this exhibition will strengthen Shaanxi’s cultural confidence, showcase the enduring beauty of Shaanxi-style artistry, and reaffirm the core values of the provincial art museum as a public, communal, and educational institution, so as to contribute the power of fine arts to the development of Shaanxi’s public cultural services and the preservation of its traditional artistic legacy in the new era.
