The film Suo Lin Nang, or The Kylin Purse, made its premiere(首映) in Beijing at the China National Film Museum on December 27,2024.
The play Suo Lin Nang was created by Peking Opera master Cheng Yanqiu and writer Weng Ouhong. First performed in 1940, it is still a classic in Peking Opera today.
In the story, Xue Xiangling, the daughter of a wealthy family, receives a bag filled with treasures from her mother before getting married. On the way to the wedding ceremony, a sudden rain makes her have to find a place to hide from the rain, where she meets another bride（新娘）, Zhao Shouzhen. Zhao is crying over her poor life, so Xue gifts Zhao the bag. Years later, a flood separates Xue from her family, and she has to work as a servant. She finds the bag in the house she serves and realizes that the owner of the house is Zhao. Realizing Xue is her benefactor, Zhao helps her reunite（团聚）with her family.
For more than three years, many people worked together to bring the play to the silver screen. At the premiere, the director Teng Junjie said that during the film-making process, he was moved by the Peking Opera artists. The filming was during the coldest winter months , but the artists overcame the difficulties while working more than 10 hours a day. While some supporting actors had few scenes, they were always staying on the set, offering to help in any way they could.
"With this film, we want to show respect to Cheng Yanqiu, our national treasure Peking Opera and the excellent Peking Opera performers who have been working hard to pass down the art form," Teng said."This film is made for today and the future," he added.
